What is a busbar?

A busbar is a metal strip or conductor used to distribute electrical current from a main power source to multiple circuits or loads within a switchboard or electrical panel.

A busbar is a thick metal conductor, usually made of copper or aluminium, that runs horizontally or vertically inside switchboards and distribution panels. It serves as the main highway for electrical current, carrying power from the main supply and dividing it among outgoing circuits. Rather than running individual wires to each circuit, busbars collect and redistribute power efficiently to multiple breakers, contactors, and other equipment connected to them.

Busbars are standard in commercial and industrial electrical installations because they handle high current loads safely and take up less space than multiple individual conductors. They come in different shapes and sizes depending on the application: rigid bars bolted into place, or flexible busbars for modular systems. Proper sizing is critical to prevent overheating and voltage drop. In Malaysia's hot, humid climate, ventilation and corrosion protection around busbars are particularly important for system reliability.
