What is a chargeman in Malaysia's electrical industry?

A chargeman is an ST-certified senior electrician who operates, maintains, and supervises high voltage electrical installations in commercial and industrial facilities in Malaysia.

The chargeman role represents the senior technical position in Malaysia's electrical trades, holding a Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) certificate that permits them to work safely and legally with high voltage systems. This certification is mandatory for anyone responsible for the day-to-day operation and upkeep of electrical installations in commercial buildings, factories, shopping centers, and industrial plants that exceed specified voltage thresholds.

A chargeman's core responsibilities include monitoring electrical systems to ensure they run safely and efficiently, responding to faults or breakdowns, coordinating maintenance schedules, and ensuring compliance with local electrical codes and safety regulations. They serve as the single point of accountability for the electrical installation at a facility, meaning building owners and facility managers rely on them to prevent outages, minimize downtime, and protect staff and equipment from electrical hazards.

The ST certification itself is substantial. It requires formal training, examination, and demonstrated competency in electrical theory, high voltage operation, and Malaysia's Electrical Supply Act requirements. Chargemen must maintain their knowledge of current standards and keep their certification current through continuing education and renewal processes. For businesses operating significant electrical infrastructure, employing or contracting a qualified chargeman is not optional but rather a legal requirement and an investment in operational reliability and workplace safety. Commercial and industrial electricians often pursue the chargeman qualification to advance their careers and take on more complex installations.
