What is a consumer unit (DB box)?

A consumer unit (DB box) is the main distribution panel in a building where incoming electricity is divided into separate circuits, each protected by a breaker or fuse for safety and control.

The consumer unit, commonly called a DB box in Malaysia, is the metal enclosure mounted on your wall where the main power supply from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) enters your home or commercial space. Inside this panel, incoming electricity is divided into multiple circuits, each with its own miniature circuit breaker (MCB) or residual current device (RCD) to protect appliances and wiring from overload and electrical faults.

Every circuit in your property, whether it serves your kitchen, bedrooms, air conditioning, or water heater, has its own breaker switch in the DB box. If a fault occurs on one circuit, only that breaker trips, isolating the problem while the rest of your home remains powered. The consumer unit also houses the main isolator switch that cuts power to the entire property when needed for maintenance or emergencies.

Building regulations in Malaysia require consumer units to meet MS 1554 (Malaysian Standard for Code of Practice on Electrical Installations) and to be inspected regularly. If your DB box is old, corroded, or the breakers are faulty, an electrician should assess it for safety upgrades. Modern units now incorporate RCD protection as standard to guard against earth faults and electric shock.
