What is load calculation?
Load calculation is the process of determining the total electrical demand a building requires, used to correctly size wiring, circuit breakers, and electrical supply.
A load calculation sums up all electrical equipment and appliances expected to run in a building to establish the total power demand. Electricians add the wattage of lights, air-conditioning units, water heaters, refrigeration, motors, and other devices to arrive at a peak demand figure, usually measured in kilowatts (kW) or amperes (A).
This total determines whether your existing supply is adequate or if you need a larger main switch, heavier gauge wiring, additional circuit breakers, or a higher capacity connection from the utility. In Malaysia, load calculations must respect the standards set by the Electrical Wiring Association and local building codes. Undersizing leads to tripped breakers, voltage drop, and fire risk. Oversizing wastes money on unnecessary infrastructure.
Load calculations are essential during new construction, renovation, or when adding heavy-load equipment. If you are upgrading your electrical system or planning substantial changes to your premises, electrician providers can assess your needs and perform accurate load calculations to ensure safe and compliant installation.
