What is PVC conduit and trunking?

PVC conduit and trunking are plastic pipes and channels that enclose and protect electrical cables and wiring in buildings, used in both concealed wall installations and surface-mounted applications.

PVC conduit and trunking are plastic piping systems that protect electrical cables and wires from damage, dust, and moisture. Conduit refers to rigid or flexible tubing that routes individual cables, while trunking is a larger channeling system that accommodates multiple cables in a single enclosure.

In Malaysian buildings, both systems serve essential functions. Conduit is commonly buried in walls and ceilings during construction or renovation, running cables from distribution boards to switch points and outlets without exposing them to physical harm or environmental exposure. Trunking sits on or inside walls as a surface-mounted or semi-concealed channel, making it practical for retrofitting installations where walls cannot be chased.

PVC is the standard material because it is affordable, non-conductive, fire-resistant to a practical degree, and resistant to the humidity and heat common in Malaysia's tropical climate. The plastic will not rust or corrode, and cables inside remain isolated from external contact. Both conduit and trunking come in various diameters and profiles to suit different cable loads and space constraints.

Proper use of conduit and trunking ensures compliance with Malaysia's electrical codes, extends cable life by preventing damage, and simplifies future maintenance or upgrades. When planning wiring for new builds or electrical rewiring and renovation work, specifying the right conduit or trunking size and routing is part of safe, durable installation.
