What is Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST)?

Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) is Malaysia's statutory body responsible for regulating electricity supply, licensing electricians, and enforcing electrical safety standards across the country.

Suruhanjaya Tenaga, known in English as the Energy Commission, is the federal regulatory authority that governs electricity supply and electrical work throughout Malaysia. Established under the Electricity Supply Act, ST sets the rules for how electricity is generated, transmitted, distributed, and used across the nation.

For electricians and electrical contractors, ST serves as the licensing and certification body. The commission issues competency certificates to qualified electricians, establishes technical standards for electrical installation and maintenance, and enforces compliance with the Electricity Supply Act and related regulations. Any electrician working on significant wiring projects, from residential rewiring to industrial installations, must either hold ST certification or work under the supervision of a certified supervisor.

ST also oversees the safety standards that govern electrical work in Malaysia. The commission publishes technical guidelines and codes of practice that determine how wiring should be installed, tested, and maintained to protect buildings and occupants from electrical hazards. This regulatory framework applies to new construction, renovations, and repairs.

When seeking electrical contractors or licensed electricians, verifying ST registration or competency certification is a key step in confirming that a service provider meets national standards. ST's oversight ensures consistency in electrical safety practices across Malaysia's diverse building stock.
