EV home charger installation

Installing a home EV charger is its own job with its own checks, separate from general rewiring or aircon wiring. It involves running a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to the parking spot, confirming the consumer unit has spare capacity and correct protection, and mounting and commissioning the charger unit itself.

Because EV chargers draw sustained high current for long periods, the electrician needs to check the cable run distance, whether the existing consumer unit can take the extra load safely, and whether the main incoming supply needs review, particularly in landed homes with older wiring or units in older condominiums with shared supply limits.

  • Confirm with your electrician whether your consumer unit has a free way and correct RCBO protection for the new circuit
  • For condos and apartments, check building management rules on charger installation in shared parking bays before booking
  • Cable run length from the consumer unit to the parking bay affects both cost and whether a supply upgrade is needed

What it costs

Cost depends mainly on cable run distance from the consumer unit to the charging point, whether the existing board has spare capacity or needs upgrading first, and the type of charger being mounted. Landed homes with long runs to a car porch typically cost more to wire than a car park bay near the meter.

FAQ

Can any electrician install an EV charger?
It should be an electrician comfortable with load calculations and RCBO protection for continuous high-current circuits, which is a specific skill within general rewiring work.
Do I need approval to install a charger in a condo?
Usually yes, through building management or JMB, since it affects shared electrical infrastructure and parking bay wiring.
Will installing a charger overload my house wiring?
Not if sized correctly. The electrician should check your consumer unit capacity first and may recommend an upgrade if the board is already near its limit.
