Solar panel system not producing power: repair and troubleshooting

This covers fixing an existing solar setup that is underperforming or has stopped working, which is a different job from a new installation. Common issues include inverter error codes, a sudden drop in generation reported on the monitoring app, tripped isolators after a storm, or panels affected by shading, dirt build-up or wiring faults at the junction box.

A technician handling this will usually start by checking the inverter display or app data for fault codes, then inspect the DC isolators, string wiring and the rooftop panels themselves for physical damage, loose connections or debris. If the system is under warranty, they can also advise whether the fault is a manufacturer issue or an installation wiring issue.

  • Have your inverter brand, model and any error code ready when you call for a faster diagnosis
  • Sudden drops after storms or haze often point to isolator trips or panel soiling rather than a serious fault
  • If output has been declining gradually over months, mention this as it suggests degradation or shading rather than a sudden fault

What it costs

Cost depends on whether the fault is a simple reset or cleaning job versus a faulty inverter or damaged panel needing replacement, plus whether the system is still under manufacturer or installer warranty, which can offset the repair cost.

FAQ

My solar app shows zero generation, is this an emergency?
It is worth a prompt callout since every day offline is lost savings, but it is not a safety emergency like exposed wiring. Most technicians can schedule this within a few days.
Is inverter repair covered separately from panel repair?
Often yes. Inverters are a common failure point with their own warranty terms, separate from the physical panels, so mention which part you suspect is at fault.
Can dirty panels really cut output significantly?
Yes, dust, bird droppings and haze residue can noticeably reduce generation, and a clean and inspection is often the first thing a technician checks before assuming a hardware fault.
